I have come across a lot of quotes about motherhood, a mother’s love, a mother’s heart and here are some of my favorites …
The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. -Honoré de Balzac
She never quite leaves her children at home, even when she doesn’t take them along. -Margaret Culkin Banning
A mother’s happiness is like a beacon, lighting up the future but reflected also on the past in the guise of fond memories. -Honoré de Balzac
Mother’s love is peace. It need not be acquired, it need not be deserved. -Erich Fromm
A mother’s love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking. -Helen Rice
A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s. -Diana, Princess of Wales
Mother is the name of God in the lips and hearts of children. -William Makepeace Thackeray
The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom. -H.W. Beecher
Now, imagine all of these things describing one heart, the heart of the Blessed Mother. Aren’t we fortunate to have been given a mother like her?
My relationship with Mama Mary started very early in my life. Being raised in a Catholic household and educated in Catholic Schools, I knew very well her special role in our family and in the Church. My devotion to her came later though. I was nearly in college when my mom introduced me to Our Lady of Guadalupe and henceforth, I was a devotee. I let her in my life and she kept me in her arms.
In all my life’s ups and downs, whether as a single person or now as a spouse and mother, she has been my anchor, a shoulder to cry on for both tears of sorrow and of joy. I simply needed to call on her, to acknowledge her presence, and even when I forget to do so because I am weak and allow negativity to take over me, she finds a way to strengthen me, to guide me, to show me she loves me.
This month the church celebrates the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Immaculate Heart of Mary always leaves me in awe. Love, kindness, mercy, generosity, compassion abound from it. She is the mother of all and her motherly love is for anyone who accepts it. My favorite marian quote comes from St. Gabriel Possenti of Our Lady of Sorrows:
Love Mary! She is loveable, faithful, constant. She will never let herself be outdone in love, but will ever remain supreme. If you are in danger, she will hasten to free you. If you are troubled, she will console you. If you are sick, she will bring you relief. If you are in need, she will help you. She does not look to see what kind of person you have been. She simply comes to a heart that wants to love her.”
Let’s explore the devotion, her role in the Marian Movement of Priests, and learn from the heart of the Mother of Jesus. Ave Maria!
As we pray to the Immaculate Heart, let us include the Holy Father’s intention for August:
The Treasure of Families: That any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity.
God bless us all!
